Check out the different ways Forward Foundation empowers girls

AMBASSADOR PROGRAMME

We firmly believe that if you want something in life, you've got to work for it and earn it. We also believe in young women who are passionate about their sport and who step up and take the lead. We reckon they're pretty awesome — They're what the Forward Foundation is all about, and what we to recognise them.

Applications for the 2019 Ambassador Programme are now open. Apply now!

BACKGROUND

The Forward Foundation Ambassador Programme aims to increase participation in girls’ sports through identifying young female game changers and enabling them to inspire those around them to participate in sport.

We’re not looking for the best player in the team, we’re looking for girls willing and passionate about lifting the profile and participation levels of girls’ sport in New Zealand. Forward Foundation Ambassadors can be any secondary school girl involved in sport in any way. Preference is given to those involved in sports with lower participation levels.

ELIGIBILTY

  • Enrolled fulltime in a New Zealand secondary school
  • Because projects are self-driven, applicants should demonstrate:
    • Practical experience in driving projects
    • Leadership potential
    • Passion for girls’ participation in sport
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to work with students, staff and community members

WHAT AMBASSADORS DO

  • Attend the annual Forward Foundation Ambassador Conference (dates TBC)
  • Occupy an active role with the aim of increasing participation in their sport
  • Initiate self-driven projects for school or community sports
  • Participate in discussion forums with other Ambassadors from across New Zealand
  • Submit regular updates outlining project progress
  • Positively promote the Forward Foundation and the Ambassador programme

OAMARU GIRLS' RUGBY FESTIVAL

Many people out there reckon that girls and rugby don’t go together. We think differently.

BACKGROUND

We are aiming to increase participation at the Oamaru South Island Rugby Festival. We recognise that many schools do not get the opportunity to attend the festival due to lack of staff availability, funding and recognition of the tournament.

We wanted to be able to plug this gap somehow – and so the Forward Foundation team was born. We threw together a group of girls from all over the region who didn’t have a team to play for, ran some trainings – and were stoked with the result. It really proved what passion and talent can become if the right people are given an opportunity. 2014 is our second year attending the tournament, and we aim to enter a team each year.

The Forward Foundation also have a team who play in a Canterbury school girls’ competition, again catering to those who don’t have a team to play for.

KEY BENEFITS

  • In consecutive years, girls will encourage their peers to attend given the success of the tournament
  • More teams participating in the tournament
  • Provide the opportunity for all girls to attend: nobody is left out or misses out

INTERSCHOOL MASH-UP

We don’t think it’s fair that anyone should miss out! That’s why we’ve put a shout out to girls who want to play rugby in Canterbury, but whose school doesn’t offer it. Girls from across the region come together in the weekly interschool competition as a mixed team. The result – everyone who wants to play, gets to play.
